Lewisham Foodbank
Select-Works is currently donating 20% of all artwork sales towards Lewisham Foodbank, a crucial resource for our local community in south-east London.
Lewisham Foodbank is an emergency food provider for residents living in the borough of Lewisham. The service is part of The Trussell Trust, a nationwide network comprised of 428 local foodbanks that work together to “combat poverty and hunger across the UK”. In 2018/19 the organisation provided 1.6 million three-day emergency food parcels with more than half of these going to children.
The organisation was founded in 1997 by Carol and Paddy Henderson to provide families and individuals in crisis with food supplies and support. The Lewisham branch has been in operation since 2012, located at its main warehouse the Hope Centre, in Forest Hill, south London.
The last two weeks of March earlier this year marked the start of Covid-19 pandemic in the UK. During this time the network saw an 81% increase in demand compared to the same period last year, resulting in over 6,250 emergency food parcels being distributed daily across the UK.
Due to social distancing, all emergency food parcels have been delivered by teams of volunteers instead of the usual collection method by the recipient. Lewisham Foodbank has been delivering 300-400 food parcels per week within the borough of Lewisham, equating to approximately £8000 worth of food. The service relies on its volunteers and donations of food and money from the public to ensure its services can continue to operate.
